Introduction

GC University Faisalabad has its focus in development of a research culture. For this purpose many measures have been taken which include the establishment of high tech instrumental labs for each and every scientific program, establishment of botanical garden, up-to-date computerized labs and best suitable facilities to the research scholars.

GC University is also publishing journals in social and basic sciences. Moreover journals from other branches of science and art are in progress and near its printing.     

Research is undertaken in GCUF and the vast majority of the academic staff of the university is working in areas which are acknowledged by independent assessors as undertaking work of national and international significance. In the most recent independent assessment of research quality in Pakistan, GCUF is placed at the good position in more than 100 universities when ranked by the most commonly accepted measure. Whilst high ranking in government-sponsored assessment is welcome, it is the enhancement that our research makes to the quality of life and lifetime prospects of people that is our driving force.

R & D Cells 

Tremendous advances have been made in the field of Science and Technology, Social Sciences, Humanities and Management Sciences in the last twelve months in this newly established University. This is evident in almost every facet of this University. In this development, the focus was to effectively tap the creative talent of its faculty. The educational reforms, process and introduction of new disciplines, that followed the establishment of GC University from Government College, Faisalabad began in 2002 when Ex - Vice Chancellor established Research Centre to promote R & D activity as well as to investigate the state of activity as well as to investigate the state of various disciplines and placement of graduates. It furnished the basic information to start the new disciplines and thus provided a new direction to the budding University.     

Research Center of the University also made efforts to empower students through co-curricular means. The stage for social and cultural events was effectively handed over to the student representatives. Organizing debates, dramas and musical shows and participating in these activities have given them a stake and much needed voice and confidence to participate in the University activities. The students' direct access to the Vice Chancellor Office has also given them an opportunity to participate in decision-making.

GC University, Faisalabad is, perhaps, the first University in the Punjab to have such a strong linkage with the industry. The idea emerged early in 2003 during a large scale city survey of students conducted by the newly established Research Center. It highlighted the fact that "Textile" was a household word in Faisalabad. The survey also identified the professional preferences of the prospective students. The Research Centre, then, organized "Industrial Exhibition and Technology Fair" and related seminars.

Research Centre is also providing guidance to students in conducting their researches in all field of art and science. This help is in shape of selecting their research topics, conducting their research and to come up with the achievements in their researches.

Area of R & D 

GC University Faisalabad is recognized for research. Currently GCUF is  offering research degrees in both  science and arts specifically in the areas of IT, social sciences, agriculture, medical, textile, psychology and many other fields. These researches show a path towards new and innovational techniques to the industries to achieve their goals and objectives

IT Infrastructure

The objectives of the project are as follows:

(i)     To upgrade the LAN facilities at GCU and to provide connectivity between departments.

(ii)      To improve the working efficiency through installation of managed switches, gigabit backbone as this will help us to create secure VLANs and workgroups. This will also improve the network efficiency; provide segmentation, Network security and traffic monitoring capability, etc.

(iii)      To modernize the IT infrastructure at GCU and to benefit fully from latest technologies, link with other universities and international Internet connectivity.

(iv)      To provide online services through a web portal for departments.

(v)       To develop integrated applications and maintain a website of GCUF for online dissemination of information regarding academic programs, research activities, departmental information, faculty information and admissions etc.

(vi)       To develop the integrated databases for admission, examination HRM and accounting system for the Institute.

(vii)      To deploy licensed software for network management, (Windows 2003 server and clients including and antivirus etc.)

(viii)    To deploy Video conferencing equipment at GCU and make one video lecture room. By which we will get the following objectives:

This project envisages the following:

i.        Up gradation of  the LAN facility at GCU through:

• Connecting all the departments with gigabit backbone to ensure fast access speed on LAN
• Central computing labs on LAN for students and faculty
• Providing Shared Network printing facility to students and Faculty
• Power backup for essential networking equipment

ii.      Improvement of working of different sections of the Institute:

• Development of database servers for admission, examination, hostels and accounts sections along with training their staff to work with these database
• Improving the existing Library database and ensuring its availability on LAN to use electronic on line libraries
• Improvement in the delivery of educational information and services to the general public by maintaining an updated mixture of DNS, Mail, Web, Proxy, News and Access Servers.
